CHANGES: AN OPPORTUNISTIC FRIEND OR AN UNAVOIDABLE FOE?

Life is a constant change. In fact, the planet and the Universe are never still even for a mere moment – that would mean death and immediate regress. In other words, movement and changes are natural and unavoidable. However, keeping that in mind, we still tend to seek stability, preserve a convenient (or accustomed) lifestyle, avoid unforeseen or untimely changes whenever possible.

Therefore, even though we know that a change is a part of life, how do we embrace and accept it when it seems so wrong and unwanted?

In order to approach the topic of Change comprehensively, let us try to categorize potential changes that we may encounter:

  1. Long planned: by this I mean a major life change which has been thought out and prepared for (in most cases): immigration, marriage, having a child, change of employment, moving flats, etc.
  2. Lifestyle decisions: a new radical haircut, new gym enrolment, new boyfriend, new habits or ridding of the old ones.
  3. Poorly timed changes: sickness, accident, currency default.
  4. Incidents that require our reaction: redundancy or layoff, break-up, unexpected pregnancy, natural disasters.

You may conclude that the first and second groups include the changes that we are responsible for and which happen as a result of our conscious decision and thoughtful consideration. So how would we approach such changes? I would say, with gratitude if they have happened successfully. It was our intention in the first place or we were guiding the situation in our beneficial way.

However, groups 3 and 4 represent those changes or incidents, which happen outside of our wish list yet directly affect us. How do we approach such “surprises”?

Sure enough, the famous saying goes: If you don’t like the situation, change it. If you can’t change it, accept it. It talks about the notion of control of a situation or a change. If you can get hold of guidance and impact the result, go for it. Try hard and affect the change in your desired way.

But very often we are helpless in the face of a hurricane or a currency devaluation. The only reasonable approach then would be to accept it and rather change your perspective: see the situation from a distance, from above, like an outsider, think how much it actually affects you personally, what is the worst that can happen as a result? Sometimes at this point you will realise that it sounds worse than it really is and with a bit of time emotions will have settled and the occurrence will have sorted itself out.

Yet undoubtedly, sometimes you get into a situation which can potentially alter your entire life and have irreversible effect on your well-being. In that case do the following:

  1. Let go off attempts to control the situation
  2. Accept the change as it is.
  3. Establish peace of mind and soul
  4. Go with the flow.

If a situation occurs that is so overwhelming and life-changing, perhaps, it is meant to happen. I do not encourage you to start believing in fate or revenge for past mistakes, but very often we do not take necessary steps when life presents choices to us, so the Universe or the Higher Power take charge and turn our paths into a different direction. Then, not being able to change it back, it is better to save energy and trust the System.

Every change is an opportunity. So, take a comfortable seat in the front row of your life and submissively observe, which better outcomes the changes are bringing along!
